Who is a hero--without being cheesy?

I am looking for examples of heroes that are not cliche, obvious, or corny. IE no Jesus, no My Mom, no Gandhi, no MLKjr, no Harriet Tubman. Those answers are too cliche. Need some good examples of brave, resourceful people who may be lesser known.
