What is mendel's law of independent ortment and how does it relate to meiosis?

Mendel's law of Independent ortment states that genetic variation in offspring can possibly come from when the gametes are produced in meiosis. So for instance, some chromosomes are separated into different gametes during the last phase of meiosis, causing the offspring to differ from the parent.
