Is it possible for a killer asteroid to knock the atmosphere of a planet out into space?

Mars has a big @ss impact crater. Could the Asteroids that left such an impression have knocked Mars atmosphere into space, if it had one at the time? And if that is the case, would the gravity pull of mars allow the planet to retain an atmosphere with a larger psi than the 0.1 bar it actually has?
